PEORIA (Ill.) – WHOI, the abc affiliate in Peoria, donated their Party Box to local tornado victims at the Peoria Pirates vs. Greensboro game this Saturday, May 17 at 7:00pm in the Carver Arena.

Tornadoes swept through Tazewell, Fulton and Woodford counties on the evening of May 10. No one was killed, but 27 people were taken to nearby hospitals. Clean-up efforts are still underway and the victims are trying to pick up the pieces and get their lives back on track.

Of the areas hit, the Cape Cod Village Apartments in Morton, IL heavily experienced the damage. About 400 reside in the apartments and of the 33 buildings, 13-16 will be completely demolished and rebuilt.

Assistant Manager for the Cape Cod Village, Rhonda Teaney, described the situation.

"Everyone made it out safely, with only a few minor injuries. We evacuated the entire complex and we are just now starting to let some of the residents back in."

WHOI has generously donated their Captain's Quarters Party Box to residents in the Cape Cod Village Apartments. The WHOI Captain's Box holds 18 mates and also includes free bottomless popcorn and soda from Center Plate, the Arena's catering company.

Rhonda Teaney offered the tickets to all residents.

"The tickets were offered on a first-come-first-serve basis, and they went fast. We appreciate WHOI for their generosity. It gives the residents a break from the tragedy."

Bruce Culligan, Sales Executive for WHOI was saddened by the devastation that so many families suffered due to the tornadoes. "On behalf of myself, General Manager Ron Pulera and the entire WHOI staff, we are just thrilled to be able to help out in any way we can."

The Pirates will be expecting intense cheering from the Cape Cod fans in the WHOI Captain's Party Box as they face the Greensboro Prowlers. The Pirates are 2-4 and the Prowlers are 3-3. The Pirates are currently fourth in the National Midwest Division and the Prowlers are fourth in the American Atlantic Division. If Peoria beats Greensboro, the win would give the Pirates a 1-0 series record against the Prowlers and a 3-4 record for 2003. The win on Saturday night would also give Bruce Cowdrey his 19th win as Pirates' head coach.

Don't miss the opportunity to cheer your Pirates on to victory! Tickets for this week's game are available and may be purchased through the Peoria Civic Center Box Office, 309-673-3200.
