Walk-Off Grand Slam by River Stevens in the Bottom
July 26, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
A Tuesday night Wolff Stadium crowd of 5,067 witnessed San Antonio pull out a thrilling 6-2 win over Corpus Christi with a River Stevens walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th.
Tuesday's contest featured a great pitcher's duel between San Antonio's Seth Simmons and Corpus Christi's Trent Thornton.
Thornton, who was making his Double-A debut, allowed just two runs on four hits and one walk, while striking out five over six innings. The right-hander's only mistake left the park in the fourth, when Nick Schulz gave San Antonio a 2-0 lead with a homer onto the berm in left. Thornton threw 58 of his 87 pitches for strikes.
Simmons entered Tuesday's start with a scoreless-inning streak of 15.1 innings. The 28-year-old hurler was once again very sharp, adding six more innings of scoreless ball. However, the streak was snapped when Ramon Laureano took Simmons' first pitch of the seventh over the wall in left. It was the only run allowed by Simmons, whose six and two-thirds innings pitched set a new career high. The former East Carolina University star limited the Hooks to just five hits and three walks, while striking out six.
Unfortunately, for Simmons, he was once again denied a victory when the Hooks strung together a game-tying rally in the eighth against the Missions' pen. J.D. Davis delivered the big hit of the frame when his comebacker struck right-hander Adam Cimber and caromed into left, scoring Derek Fisher from third.
The game remained tied until the 10th when the Missions put something together against reliever Aaron West. After Luis Tejada flew out to center to begin the frame, Rocky Gale singled to right. Chase Jensen put the Hooks on their heels when he followed with a double into right center. Corpus Christi opted to intentionally walk Franchy Cordero to load the bases. That brought up Stevens, who belted a 1-2 pitch from West (5-2) over the wall in right. Stevens finished with a game-high three hits.
Jason Jester (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Missions. The thrilling finish extended San Antonio's season-high win streak to five games.
San Antonio (17-15, 39-63) wraps up its three-game series with Corpus Christi (14-18, 61-41) Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Southpaw Tim Berry (0-1, 8.64) will get the ball for the Missions in the finale, while the Hooks counter with right-hander Francis Martes (5-4, 4.08).
Notes: It was the first walk-off grand slam for San Antonio since Kyle Blanks accomplished the feat May 21, 2011 vs. Frisco. Simmons' scoreless streak was the longest by a San Antonio starter since Josh Geer in May of 2007.
