Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

"The future of Volcanoes Stadium is NOW," said Mickey Walker CEO of the Mavericks Independent Baseball League. The Stadium will become 100% artificial turf with installation to begin this fall. Mickey's parents, Jerry and Lisa Walker who built the Stadium in 1997, presented the project to the Community Sports Development Alliance in hopes it would be approved for funding by the Alliance. "This was a compelling project that we wanted to be involved with," said Joe O'Connor, Director for the Alliance. "The council approved funding for approximately 70% of the 2.2 million-dollar project with the balance being funded privately," said O'Connor. "The Stadium has had a long rich history of providing family friendly affordable entertainment. It's a regional landmark that nearly 3 million people have visited since it opened. The artificial surface will ensure its future and open the facility for many multiple uses and various sports such as soccer, football, lacrosse, cricket, disc golf, etc. - virtually opening the Stadium for year-round use," concluded O'Connor.

"It's time! My plan is to open the Stadium for use the entire year - and not just sports, but numerous other uses. The artificial surface will allow for that," said Walker. Volcanoes Stadium has been home to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes since 1997, and the Portland Mavericks, Campesinos de Salem-Keizer and the Portland Mavericks since 2021. In addition, Corban University has used the Stadium as their Home since 2017. The State of Oregon High School Baseball Championship has been held at Volcanoes Stadium for over 20 years.

Limited Advertising Opportunities are available. Mickey Walker and his marketing team are currently speaking with potential partners who are interested in having their logo embedded in the new turf. "We're going with a Less is More mentality. Just 5 positions will be available on the turf. Traditional spots such as both on-deck circles and the position behind Homeplate. We'll add 1 spot in front of the home and the visiting dugouts. This will be first-class all the way," concluded Walker. Interested parties should contact Mickey Walker at 503-779-3389 or at mickey777w@gmail.com. "We need to get this all wrapped up in the next few weeks as production at the mill is expected to begin in September," added Walker.
