"The Sandman" Sandy Allan to appear at this week's Cyclones Home Games

February 20, 2006 - SPHL (SPHL)
Twin City Cyclones News Release

One of the most popular players in the history of Pee Dee hockey will be in attendance at the Pee Dee Cyclones home games this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Florence Civic Center. Goaltender Sandy Allan, who had five great seasons for the Pee Dee Pride from 1998-99 through 2001-02 when an unfortunate off-ice accident cut short his professional career, will be in attendance to meet and greet the fans and be available for media interviews throughout the weekend.

Allan, 32, was a draft choice of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Pee Dee Pride for the 1997-98 season and during the 1998-99 hockey season, he teamed with current Cyclones coach Mark Richards, as the best goaltending tandem in the ECHL. That season "The Sandman" (Allan) and "The Wall" (Richards) won 50 games between them and led the Pee Dee Pride to the ECHL's Southeast Division Regular Season Championship only to lose in the Southern Conference Finals during the playoffs. During his five seasons in the Pee Dee, Sandy won 98 regular season games.

The Cyclones are home all week at the Florence Civic Center, playing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Face off is 7:35PM each night. Pee Dee is in sixth place in the SPHL with a record of 15 wins-24 losses-5 overtime losses. The Cyclones have a nine point lead over Jacksonville for the sixth, and final, SPHL playoff spot. The SPHL playoffs will begin during the week of March 20th.

Cyclones and the SPHL Playoffs

If the SPHL regular season ended today, the Cyclones would be in sixth place and qualify for the sixth and final playoff spot. As of right now, they would play the first place Knoxville Ice Bears in a best of five series that would start sometime during the week of March 20th. According to reports in the February 9th edition of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, due to an arena conflict with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Knoxville will not have home ice availability for the first week of the SPHL playoffs and games #1 & #2 of the series could be played at the Florence Civic Center.
