Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Tommy Shirley struck out six in six shutout innings while allowing four hits as Corpus Christi thumped Midland 9-3 Thursday before 5,382 at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks, who took three of four from Midland, stand 12-8. The RockHounds are 11-8.
Shirley (2-2), who's logged 10 straight shutout innings, walked just one. He threw 86 pitches, 55 for strikes. Houston's ninth-round selection four summers ago has 28 strikeouts vs. four walks over 23 1/3 innings and five appearances this season.
Matt Heidenreich earned a three-inning save.
Matt Duffy made Andrew Werner (0-2) pay for a fat first-inning fastball, driving his 1-0 pitch into the Corpus Christi bullpen for a 2-0 Hooks lead. Preston Tucker started two-out trouble with a bouncing single up the middle.
A two-out flurry again damaged Midland in the second. Jio Mier singled to center and took second on a wild pitch. Nine-hole hitter Tyler Heineman picked him up with a low liner to right, making it 3-0.
Werner subsequently issued a full-count free pass to Chris Epps and was removed for Ryan Doolitle after just 1 2/3 innings, four hits, two strikeouts and 49 pitches.
The RockHounds threatened for the first and only time against Shirley during the fifth. Chad Oberacker's infield single pushed Dusty Coleman into scoring position with two away, but the tall lefty got Miles Head on a fly to Tucker just inside the right-field line.
The Hooks responded by executing a two-out delayed double steal for a 4-0 advantage, Epps (lead-off walk) on the front end and Duffy on the back. Joe Sclafani helped Epps along by singling to left.
A bunt single, book-rule double and consecutive sacrifice flies in the sixth put Corpus Christi's run total at six. Leo Heras, Nolan Fontana, Mier and Heineman participated in the assault of Jesus Castillo.
With Shirley in the clubhouse, Midland struck for two in the seventh off Heidenreich. Jefry Marte reached on an error and Coleman walked before Oberacker's one-out double. Head followed with an RBI single.
Again, the Hooks had a two-out reply, M.P. Cokinos' seed to center plating Tucker and a two-run, bases-loaded single by Mier off Blake Hassebrock. Castillo was tagged for four runs over 2 1/3.
Conner Crumbliss cracked a solo homer in the eighth and Marte extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Jordan Jankowski (0-1) goes for the Hooks Friday at 7:10 against Jerad Eickhoff (1-1) as Frisco comes to town for four. Bud Light presents Friday Fireworks postgame.
