Sharks Pitching Stifles Marlins

June 1, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins (1-2) could only muster three hits against the Wilmington Sharks (3-1) pitching staff Friday night as the Sharks spoiled the Marlins home-opener, 2-0 in Morehead City.

The combination of Blaze Tart, Josh Ayers, Scott Kerrigan and Wesley Hatley combined to allow just three hits and struck out eight Marlins as the bats never got going for Morehead City. Ayers (1-0) earned the win, throwing two innings in relief of Tart, who made his first start since 2011 coming back from Tommy John surgery.

The Sharks' Zach Stephens scored the first run of the game on an RBI-single off the bat Casey Goss in the sixth inning. They tacked on their second and final run of the game in the ninth when Aaron Preston singled, stole second and third base and came around to score on a throwing error by Corey Bass.

Ryan Oglesby (1-2) suffered the loss, tossing one inning in relief and allowing one run. Matt Ogden threw well in his first Marlins start, throwing five innings and allowing no runs on three hits.

The Marlins return to action tomorrow night as they travel to Fayetteville to take on the SwampDogs. The game marks the first of four the two teams will play over the next five days. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 15 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: Bass threw out two base runners, giving him five runners caught stealing on the season... Geoff DeGroot stole a base for the third time this season... The Marlins allowed one earned run, marking just the second earned run they have surrendered this season.
