Niles, Ohio - The Scrappers erased an early 2-0 deficit but allowed three runs in the eighth inning and lost, 7-4, to the Staten Island Yankees.
The Yankees led off the eighth with back-to-back hits and had runners on the corners. Ben Gamel broke the 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Angelo Gumbs tripled to make it 6-4 and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
Mahoning Valley trailed 2-0 before the team ever came to the plate. Staten Island's Mason Williams led off the game with a home run and Cito Culver tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
The Scrappers took a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-run single by Cody Elliott, but the Yankees scored a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Scrappers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth before the Yankees went ahead for good in the eighth inning.
Staten Island reliever Fred Lewis picked up the win to improve to 4-0. Nate Striz picked up the loss to fall to 2-3. Philip Wetherell earned his second save of the season.
The Scrappers and Yankees will continue their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm.
