West Texas Roughnecks News Release
ODESSA, TX: The Odessa Roughnecks announced on Wednesday, March 4, during a press conference from Rockin'Q Smokehouse that WR Torrey Day has been signed and will return for his fourth season with the Roughnecks. The Roughnecks veteran wide out registered 56 catches for 592 and nine touchdowns in 13 games played in 2008. Defensively, Day intercepted two passes, collected 8.5 total tackles, and had two pass break-ups at defensive back.
"I"m excited about coming back to the Roughnecks for another season. I wanted to come back to Odessa so we can finish what we started last season after what happened in the playoffs. I feel that we have a great group of guys coming back this season and I want to help bring a championship to the Permian Basin community." explained Day.
In 2007, Day (6'1", 195 lbs.) split duties as an offensive assistant and player with Odessa. He went on to lead the IFL (Intense Football League) with 103 receptions, 1,282 receiving yards, and 23 touchdowns. Torrey first came to the Roughnecks in late 2006 to help Odessa clinch their first IFL Championship. In his only appearance in the regular season, Day caught nine passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Day was outstanding in the '06 post-season. Versus Louisiana, he made 11 receptions for 135 yards and four touchdowns. In the Intense Bowl versus Corpus Christi, Day collected nine receptions for 85 yards and four touchdowns.
Before Odessa, the Alabama A&M graduate led the Tennessee Valley Vipers of the AF2 with 98 receptions, 1,313 yards, and 21 touchdowns through most of the 2006 season. In 2004 and 2005, he played with the Green Bay Blizzard of the AF2 and during that time he had 55 receptions for 679 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 33 tackles on defense.
After a standout career at Alabama A&M, Day began his professional indoor football career in 2003 with the Louisville Fire. Day would go on to lead the Fire that season with 74 receptions and 934 receiving yards. Torrey received his Bachelor's Degree from Alabama A&M in Sports Management.
"Having Torrey back is exciting because he is such a difference-maker on the field. He has made so many plays throughout his career in Odessa. He has the ability to be a factor at wide receiver and at defensive back. Torrey will be a key player for our team this season." stated Odessa Roughnecks Head Coach, Chris Williams.
In addition to player signing announcements, the Odessa Roughnecks announced the Coaching Staff for the 2009 season. "Each of our coaches brings something special to the table.
