Rocks Offering Free Tickets to Promote Fight against Childhood Obesity
April 19, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - As a part of their concerted effort to promote awareness in the fight against childhood obesity, the Wilmington Blue Rocks will be doling out plenty of goodies during their day game on Wednesday, April 20. The Rocks are offering a limited number of free tickets to kids of all ages, their parents and the community courtesy of Healthy Delawareans Today and Tomorrow. Before and during the game, both on the field and in the stands, the Blue Rocks will also be hosting games and activities to promote healthy diet tips and healthy activities. Simultaneously there will be a health fair taking place on the concourse.
Pre-game festivities include remarks from dignitaries such as Michelle Taylor, President and Chief Executive Officer of the United Way of Delaware, Lt. Gov. Matt Denn, and Rep. John Carney. Contests and activities will take place during inning breaks. Students will even have the chance to win prizes by making healthy selections when at the concession stands. As fans leave Wednesday's game, they will receive a bag of BAKED potato chips, courtesy of Herr's.
Earlier this year, the Blue Rocks partnered with Healthy Delawareans Today and Tomorrow to go to bat against childhood obesity. The April 20 game is one component of this partnership. Another is the Happy Healthy Kids school program, where over 10,000 local kids pledged to do something good for their health. Each participant receives a ticket to a future Blue Rocks game, a bottle of water, a healthy snack, and the opportunity to go on the field for a pre-game workout with Rocky. Rocky Bluewinkle even camped out on the roof of Frawley Stadium last week, to raise awareness for childhood obesity.
Healthy Delawareans Today & Tomorrow (HDTT) is a coalition of community partners, convened by United Way of Delaware with support from AstraZeneca that includes government agencies, hospitals, low- and no-cost clinics and faith-based organizations. HDTT promotes awareness and availability of free and reduced-cost healthcare services.
