Peoria Rivermen News Release
Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie of the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL announced today that former NHL left wing Jeff Zehr has been signed and added to the team's roster with one week remaining until the opening of the 2003-2004 season. Christie also announced that goaltender Levente Szuper, who is on a two-way contract with the team's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate â the Worcester IceCats, has been reassigned.
Zehr â a 6-foot-3, 195-pound left wing â notched 58 points (23g, 35a) in 58 games with 229 penalty minutes (PIM) for the Columbus Cottonmouths in 2002-2003. The 22-year-old native of Woodstock, Ontario â who will be entering his fifth professional season â ranked second on the team in goals and third in PIM. During his rookie season (1999-2000), he collected six points (3g, 3a) in 12 games for the Providence Bruins (AHL), and also spent four games with the Boston Bruins, picking up a minor penalty. He was selected by New York Islanders in the second round (31st overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
Szuper â a 5-foot-11, 175-pound netminder â has been called up by Worcester because goaltender Curtis Sanford and his wife are expecting a child. Szuper was signed by Worcester during the 2002-2003 offseason after spending three years in the Calgary Flames organization with the Saint John Flames (AHL). The 23-year-old native of Budapest, Hungary has a 43-46-9 career record with Saint John with a 2.50 goals against average (GAA) and a .903 save percentage. He was selected by Calgary Flames in the fourth round (116th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
