Memphis Redbirds News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. - Pitchers John Lamb and Casey Coleman held the Redbirds offense to a season-low one hit as the Omaha Storm Chasers dealt Memphis a 5-0 shutout on Wednesday night at Werner Park.
With the loss, Memphis (57-53) snapped a season-best six-game winning streak and falls to two full games behind division-leading Nashville, which remained idle after being postponed due to a rainout in Colorado Springs this afternoon.
The shutout was Memphis' ninth of the season, which is tied with four other clubs for most in the league.
Lamb (6-8) walked two, struck out seven, and only allowed one hit through seven dominant innings, a second-inning single to outfielder Tommy Pham. The left-hander then retired the next 17 in a row before departing after 99 pitches (60 for strikes). Coleman struck out one over the two final frames to end the night.
Omaha scored a run in back-to-back innings for an early 2-0 advantage. Pedro Ciraco reached on a one-out single to left, advanced to third on a Whit Merrifield single, and came around to score on a Johnny Giavotella RBI groundout. Omaha tacked on its next run in the fourth on a Pete Kozma throwing error combined with a Justin Maxwell infield single.
Omaha tacked on three more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a Giavotella sacrifice fly and Carlo Peguero two-run double.
Redbirds starter Zach Petrick (6-5) recorded his eighth quality start in the defeat, yielding four runs (three earned) on nine hits and four strikeouts. The right-hander recorded one out in the seventh before being removed with a pair of runners on base.
Memphis and Omaha continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Thursday night at Werner Park. Left-hander John Gast (3-2, 5.04) will toe the rubber for the Redbirds against Storm Chasers lefty Buddy Baumann (1-1, 1.52).
