Phantoms sign Craig Berube
November 18, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 18, 2003) - The Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League today signed veteran left wing Craig Berube to a player tryout contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed.
Berube, 37, will be entering his 18th season of professional hockey since originally signing as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers in March 1986. In 1,054 career NHL games with the Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders, he has compiled 159 points (61G, 98A) and 3,149 penalty minutes, which ranked seventh all-time heading into the 2003-04 season.
"Craig wants to play in the NHL again and this is an opportunity for him to show that he can still help somebody, if not the Flyers then some other team," said Flyers and Phantoms assistant general manager Paul Holmgren. "Hopefully this can be a win-win situation for everyone. For Craig, it could lead him back to the NHL. For the Phantoms, his leadership and character will help the younger players, as guys like Patrick Sharp and Jeff Woywitka can learn nothing but great things from him."
Berube spent his first five professional seasons (1986-91) in the Flyers organization, leading the club in penalties minutes in both 1989-90 and 1990-91. He spent the following two seasons with the Maple Leafs and Flames before beginning a 5 ½-year run with the Capitals from 1993-99, which included a career-high 305 PIM over 84 games during the 1993-94 campaign and a Stanley Cup Finals loss to the Detroit Red Wings in 1997-98.
Berube was reacquired by the Flyers in March 1999 and appeared in 77 games with them the following season before splitting 2000-01 between the Capitals and Islanders and spending the last two years in Calgary.
In 323 career games with the Flyers, Berube has 54 points (20G, 34A) and 1,138 PIM, which ranks ninth on the club's all-time list.
Berube is expected to make his Phantoms debut this Friday at 7:05 p.m., when the team hosts the Lowell Lock Monsters at the Wachovia Spectrum. Philadelphia then plays at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday before entertaining the Portland Pirates on Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
Tickets to all Phantoms home games are $19, $18 and $14 for adults, and $8 for all children 14 and under, and are available now at the Wachovia Center box office and all Ticketmaster locations throughout the Delaware Valley. Tickets can also be charged by phone by calling (215) 336-2000, (856) 338-9000 or (302) 984-2000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
