Pete Rose Jr. Signs with Saltdogs

July 27, 2004 - Northern League (NL)
Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

Lincoln, NE- The Lincoln Saltdogs signed Pete Rose Jr. to a contract Tuesday, the club announced. The former major leaguer will join the Saltdogs on the road for Tuesday night's game against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. To make room for Rose, the Saltdogs released relief pitcher Chris Weidert. In another roster move, the Saltdogs signed catcher D.J. Rengifo to take the place of Kevin Sullivan, who was placed on the inactive list Monday.

Peter Edward Rose Jr. was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 12th round of the 1988 draft, and has played professionally since 1989. He reached the major leagues for 11 games with the Cincinnati Reds in 1997. Rose earned the call-up by having his most productive minor league season that year, hitting .308 with 25 home runs and 98 RBI for AA Chattanooga. He has hit 100 home runs in his 15 professional seasons.

Rose spent parts of both the 2002 and 2003 seasons in the Northern League, and helped lead the Winnipeg Goldeyes to the league's Western Division championship in 2002 by hitting .344 with 8 home runs and 53 RBI in just 209 at-bats. He was the starting 3rd baseman for the Northern League's Eastern Division at the 2003 All-Star game at Lincoln's Haymarket Park, and also won the home run derby at the skills competition.

In addition to acquiring Rose, the Saltdogs signed catcher D.J. Rengifo to a contract. Rengifo played for Lincoln in 2003, and hit .261 in 30 games. He will help with the catching duties in place of Kevin Sullivan, who was placed on the inactive list Monday. Sullivan tore ligaments in his left thumb in action against the Schaumburg Flyers July 25th, and will not be eligible to re-join the Saltdogs active roster until August 26th. Sullivan is hitting .268 with 5 home runs and 33 RBI in 2004.
