PCL1 Reno Aces

Padres Clip Aces, 6-4

August 29, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

TUCSON, Ariz.- Reno's first-ever postseason berth will have to wait at least one more day, as the Tucson Padres erased an early deficit and topped the Aces, 6-4, Sunday night at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Aces jumped ahead early, using an Evan Frey single and a Mark Hallberg double on the first two pitches of the ballgame to take a quick 1-0 lead. Reno added on in the third on a two-run triple off the bat of Ryan Langerhans to go ahead 3-0. The Padres would have an answer, though, scoring once in the third and three times in the sixth to take a lead they would not relinquish.

With a loss for first-place Reno-coupled with a victory by second-place Tacoma earlier in the day-the Aces remain one win or one Tacoma loss away from clinching at least a share of the Pacific North Division crown and a berth in the postseason. Any combination of two Aces wins or Tacoma losses will give the Aces the outright division championship.

Wes Roemer (0-1) took the loss for Reno, surrendering five runs on seven hits over six innings of work. Roemer struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Out of the Aces bullpen, Brian Stokes allowed a run on three hits in two frames.

The win went to Tucson starter Matt Buschmann (6-5), who scattered four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings of work. After Greg Burke and Luis Perdomo each earned a hold, Brad Brach slammed the door in the ninth for his 11th save.

At the plate for Reno, Tommy Manzella led the way with three hits and a run scored. Hallberg and Langerhans each registered two RBIs for the Aces.

The Aces now head home for the final regular-season homestand of the season, beginning with a four-game set against the Fresno Grizzlies, Triple-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. In Monday's opener, RHP Barry Enright (8-5, 5.38 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while Fresno will counter with LHP Geno Espineli (2-4, 7.49 ERA). First pitch from Aces Ballpark is set for 7:05 p.m. PT. A win in Monday's series opener will clinch a playoff berth for the Aces.
