CORPUS CHRISTI - Three-time selection Hannah Halepaska, a senior pitcher from Orange Grove, headlines the 2016 South Texas Pre-Season Small School All-Star Team announced Monday.
All 14 members will be honored with their large school counterparts at the 12th South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on Thursday, January 14, at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center.
The event is presented by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and iHeartMedia. Tickets are on sale at the Whataburger Field Box Office. To order by phone, call 361-561-HOOK (4665).
Halepaska, the reigning District 31-4A MVP and third-team 2015 Caller-Times All-South Texas, was District 30-3A MVP as a sophomore. Five others - including four seniors - repeat from last year's honor squad: Santa Gertrudis Academy second baseman Kristen Gonzalez, San Diego shortstop Kayla Oliveira, and Rockport-Fulton pitcher Kaylee Polasek, plus a pair of Odem Lady Owls, third baseman Lycena Recio and pitcher Mia Auster.
Auster's classmate, junior outfielder Breanna Martinez, gives Odem three representatives, matching SGA and Sinton. The Lady Lions also placed sophomore pitcher Saidi Castillo and junior catcher Cassandra Lopez, while the Lady Pirates are represented by senior first baseman Alyssa Rivera and a pair of outfielders, senior Ada Cantu and junior Tiara White.
Two juniors, Orange grove shortstop McKenzie Hahn and Rockport-Fulton designated player Loren Kelly, complete the team.
The all-stars were nominated and selected by area Class 4A, 3A, 2A, and private school coaches.
