Ogden Raptors Announce More Details for "A League of Their Own" Tribute Games

June 24, 2022 - Pioneer League (PL)
Ogden Raptors News Release

Ogden, Ut. - The Ogden Raptors have previously announced their intentions to hold a single tribute game in honor of the 30th anniversary of the movie "A League of Their Own". When President Dave Baggott was informed that it would be the 30th anniversary of the movie and presented with the idea to show the movie at Lindquist Field following a Raptors home game he took the idea and did one better. Baggott said that "we should put two women's teams together and play and actual baseball game." Many conversations later with staff, community partners, and many local baseball fans, the plans to put on a Woman's baseball game continued to grow.

When Justin Nakishi, co-owner of SavOn Sporting Goods, contacted Baggott about having his traveling girls softball team play in the game, Baggott quickly named Nakishi the manager for the visiting team, the Junction City Dolls, where his entire softball team will play as one team.

On Saturday, June 11th the Ogden Raptors hosted a free open tryout for women, in the hopes that enough would show up and want to play baseball. The tryout was run by the Ogden Raptors coaching staff and went better than anyone had expected. All of the women that showed up made the cut to be apart of the team to be known as the Ogden Whoopie Girls, playing tribute to the heritage of the Whoopie Girls of the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo.

Since the Raptors play on Friday July 1st, the actual anniversary of the movie, the Dolls will take on the Whoopie Girls Saturday July 2nd at 7:00pm. It is free to the public and the Raptors will be making a cash donation and using the event to raise additional donations from the public for the "Hope Squad" an organization focusing on youth suicide prevention.

The second game will be played on Monday, July 11 at 7:30pm. This game will be played in conjunction with Triple Crown's 10u and 12 u World Series kick off event present by Visit Ogden. This game will also be free to the public and the Raptors will again be making donation and seeking additional donations for "Live On" an organization that the Raptors have already teamed up with this season to bring awareness to Suicide prevention across all ages.

Due to the game being part of Triple Crown's kick off event, fireworks will also be set off post-game.

Gates to both games will open at 6:00pm, be completely free to attend, and seating will be on a first come first serve basis. Concessions and merchandise featuring replica player jerseys and more will be open. The Raptors, Dolls, and Whoopie Girls would like to extend an invitation to all media outlets for them to attend their dual workout on Tuesday, July 28 at 7:00pm. Both teams will be available for interviews throughout the practice as it will be doubling as their media day.
