Memphis Express News Release
TODAY'S HEADLINES
- The Express took the field at 9:30 am CT on Thursday at Cornerstone Christian School.
- Thursday marked the third day of padded practice. The Express worked on installing the offense and defense, one-on-ones, punt coverage, red zone offense, 7-on-7s, and 11-on-11s.
HIGHLIGHTS
- DE Anthony Johnson (LSU) participated in his first practice since being added to the active roster and made an immediate impact. Johnson was disruptive in every drill. During a sequence with the offense spotted at its own one-yard line, Johnson produced three safeties. In 11-on-11 action, Johnson notched a pair of sacks.
- WR Reece Horn (Indianapolis) continued to produce highlight reel catches for the second day in a row, connecting on a 40-yard bomb in 7-on-7, and reeling in a one-handed grab on a low throw to the outside along the sideline in 11-on-11.
- CB Malik Boynton (Austin Peay) made a diving pass break-up in traffic during 11-on-11 action.
- LB Andrew Jackson (Western Kentucky) forced a fumble in pass coverage during red zone offense.
- WR Fabian Guerra (Fairmont State) hauled in a 20-yard touchdown reception from QB Zach Mettenberger (LSU) in 7-on-7, laying out on a corner route to make the play.
QUOTES
- Head Coach Mike Singletary on the offense making big plays and whether that's something the defense needs to work on: "I definitely like to see the competition and the challenge. It seemed like yesterday the defense rose up a bit and closed the offense out. We had some periods today where the defense did well. Anytime the offense is making plays I love it, but the defensive side of me will always say 'Okay defense where are you?'"
- Head Coach Mike Singletary specifying what he wants from the defense: "We have to continue to execute. We have to continue to do the little things, take care of the details. I want to see that the players are continuing to do what the coaches are teaching."
- Head Coach Mike Singletary on the upcoming joint practice with Atlanta: "I'm having our guys approach it as just another practice. Let's not lose our minds. It's not a game that we have to win or lose. Let's go out and get better. Let's learn something from it. It's somebody else to hit, somebody else to run routes against, so from that standpoint it's good."
- DE Anthony Johnson (LSU) on his role: "At the end of the day, that's where it starts. It starts up front. I like to live in the backfield. So if I can beat the running back to the punch, that's my job."
- DE Anthony Johnson (LSU) on his opportunity with the Memphis Express: "It's been a blessing. It's a great opportunity to join this league. The Express gave me a great opportunity. My teammates are right behind me. I'm happy with this opportunity and going forward with it."
