Match Preview: San Diego Wave FC vs. Kansas City Current
August 7, 2022 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
San Diego Wave FC News Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego Wave Fútbol Club (7-3-4) returns to Torero Stadium on Sunday, August 7, to face Kansas City Current (5-4-4) at 2 p.m. PT. After a thrilling 1-0 win over Chicago Red Stars last Saturday at Soldier Field, San Diego Wave FC looks for another three points against a difficult opponent, this time in front of supporters at home.
Currently in Costa Rica for the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, 17-year-old Jaedyn Shaw scored last Saturday's deciding goal on her professional debut off an intelligent assist by Katie Johnson. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was also an essential part of the win with a late-match penalty kick save in the 81st minute, her seventh career penalty save in the NWSL.
"When we previously played Kansas, they gave us lots of problems, especially their two up front, so we know it's going to be a really difficult game. I have to respect them, they're a really good team, and they've gone on a really good run. They have not lost a game for a while, so I have a lot of respect for them, and Matt has done a great job as the head coach there. We know it's going to be a really difficult game, but we're at home, so we're going to have a go as we always do."
Casey Stoney, Wave FC Head Coach
The last time the two sides met, San Diego Wave FC took a hard-earned point back from Children's Mercy Park with a final score of 2-2. The Current opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Wave FC drew a penalty kick, completed by Alex Morgan. In the second half, Kansas pulled ahead again, but Morgan denied their win with an equalizing late-match goal in the 90th minute, assisted by Sofia Jakobsson.
After Saturday's matchup, San Diego Wave FC continues its home stretch on Saturday, August 13, hosting Orlando City Pride at Torero Stadium, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. PT. Wave FC closes out three consecutive games at Torero Stadium on Saturday, August 20, against the Houston Dash while celebrating Hispanic Heritage Night, presented by Televisa.
With just three matches left at Torero Stadium, San Diego Wave FC looks forward to its home opener at the new state-of-the-art Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, September 17. San Diego Wave FC intends to shatter the NWSL attendance record in the 32,000-seat stadium as they take on Southern California-rival Angel City FC at 7 p.m. PT.ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹ Tickets for Snapdragon Stadium and all of Wave FC's remaining home matches at Torero Stadium can be found here.
