July 11, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI - July 11, 2011. The Madison Mallards fell to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 2-0 Monday night in front of 915 fans at Witter Field. The loss was the fourth straight for the Mallards, who are now 1-4 for the second half of the 2011 Northwoods League season.
The game was close throughout, but was decided early on a two-out, two-run single by Alex Edward (LSU) that scored both Wisconsin Rapids runs in the third inning. Both starting pitchers had good games.
Nick Sutherland (Minnesota State - Mankato) went a season-high six full innings, allowing the two runs on only four hits. He walked two and struck out seven, but took the loss. Sutherland is now 0-2 on the season. Also pitching for the Mallards in relief was Denny Clement (Texas A&M), who pitched the final two innings.
The winning pitcher was Rafters' starter Paul Schwendel (Emory University), who also went six innings. Schwendel, making his first start of the season, allowed three hits, walked three, and struck out four.
Offensively, the Mallards were lead by a quarter of hitters who had one hit each. Justin Parr (Illinois) and Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) each had doubles, while Willie Argo (Illinois) and Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) had singles.
The Rafters had five hits as a team, and were led by Edward, who had two of those hits in four at-bats and the two RBI. Cody Koback (Wisconsin - Stevens Point), Bobby Martin (Valparaiso), and Garrett Nash (Oregon State) had the other three hits for Rapids, who went over the .500 mark for the first time in team history.
The Mallards and Rafters ended their three-game series Monday. The Mallards will now head back to the "Duck Pond" and will take on the Waterloo Bucks for three games starting Tuesday in their final home stand before the All-Star break. All three games of the series will begin at 7:05 p.m.
