THE HILLCATS: The Hillcats beat the Winston-Salem Dash last night 8-2...1B Michael Spina drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, while INF Emerson Landoni went 3-for-4 with three RBIs as well...LHP Dimasther Delgado (7-6) gave up two unearned runs early to the Dash but retired the final 14 batters he faced, completing seven innings on his way to the win...The 'Cats are now 29-31 in the second half and are in third place in the Northern Division, 1.5 games out of first...
VS. WILMINGTON: Lynchburg is 8-9 against the Blue Rocks this season...This is the final series between the two clubs, and the season series is still up for grabs...The Hillcats most recently lost three of four in Wilmington last weekend but they are 4-3 at home against the Blue Rocks this season...
OVER DUE: The Hillcats offense woke up last night with eight runs on 11 hits...It was their first double-digit hit effort in 12 games, since they beat the Carolina Mudcats 7-3 August 11 with 12 hits...The eight runs represented half of what they had produced over their previous eight games...The 'Cats scored just five runs in four games last weekend in Wilmington, losing by one runs twice on walk-offs...
WITHIN THREE WITH THREE TO PLAY: That is, three games separate all four Northern Division teams with three series left to play in the regular season...There are 10 scheduled games left, barring any more cancellations...The Frederick Keys just took four of five from the Blue Rocks to storm into first place by a half game over the Rocks...The Hillcats are 1.5 back, and the Potomac Nationals sit 3.0 games out...Frederick and Potomac meet in Potomac this weekend...
BOTTOMS UP: The final three in the lineup last night stole the show for Lynchburg...1B Michael Spina, RF David Rohm, and 2B Emerson Landoni went a combined 7-for-12 (.583) as the seven, eight, nine batters respectively...They drove in seven runs and scored four as well in the 8-2 victory...The rest of the order went 4-for-21 (.190)...
GOT YOUR DASH IN A ROW: Between LHP Dimasther Delgado and RHP John Cornely, the Hillcats sat down the final 20 Dash batters last night in order...Cornely retired the final six, striking out five, in his Hillcat debut last night...The 20 straight retired was the most by the Hillcats staff since RHP Gus Schlosser retired 24 consecutive Potomac Nationals on July 18...
HOMER OF THE BRAVE: 1B Michael Spina went 2-for-4 last night with two doubles, three RBIs, and a run scored...Currently on a four-game hitting streak (5-for-14), matching the streak he began his Hillcat career on...Spina went 5-for-14 in his first four games with the 'Cats from July 21-24 with two doubles, five RBIs, and a runs scored...He has five RBIs on his current streak as well, but with three doubles, a home run, and has scored two runs...
'EMER'SION THERAPY: INF Emerson Landoni is hitting .262 in the month of August, after a 3-for-4 effort last night, with three RBIs...He has benefited greatly from the absence of 2B Tommy La Stella, out since July 11...With a week left in August, Landoni already has more at-bats this month than any other this season...Has monthly highs in batting average, hits (16), and RBIs (8), while posting an on-base percentage over .300 for the first time (.308)...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Leondy Perez signed as a free agent January 15, 2007 with Kansas City Royals...Born in Peublo Viejo, Azua, Dominican Republic...Made his professional debut with the DSL Royals in 2007...Went 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 16 appearances, five starts...Has advanced a level in the organization every year...Spent 2011 with Low-A Kane County...He threw a career-high 153 innings in his first year of full-season ball...Went 8-13 with a 3.41 ERA in 27 starts...Ranked second in ERA in the Midwest League...Struck out 108 and walked only 29...He is 3-4 with a 3.92 ERA in 17 games, 10 starts with the Blue Rocks this season...Pitched two scoreless innings of relief against the Hillcats May 17, gave up two hits and struck out two...Gave up two runs in six innings in his first start against the 'Cats last Sunday...Took a no-decision as the Hillcats scored in the ninth to win...
