Team scrimmage highlights a full-day of activity this Saturday
LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Avengers, entering their third season of play in the Arena Football League, will host a "Meet the Team" picnic on Saturday, March 30, at its training facility located at West Los Angeles College in Culver City. The practice field is at 4800 Freshman Drive, off of Overland Blvd. (two blocks southeast of the intersection of Overland and Jefferson).
More than 1,000 Avenger season ticket holders have sent in their RSVP for the event, which centers around a team scrimmage that kicks off at 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided by Carl's Jr.
Following the scrimmage, fans will be allowed to mingle with the team and get autographs from their favorite Avenger players and coaches. The "A-Team" dancers and team mascot "T.D." also will be on hand to take pictures with the public at this event, which is geared toward the whole family.
"The most important facet of this franchise is its fans and this will get many of them well prepared for the excitement of the upcoming season," Avenger president and chief operating officer Todd Merkow said. "We've been looking forward to Saturday for a long time and it promises to be fantastic."
Avenger season seat holders will receive their tickets and a free gift during the afternoon.
Saturday's daylong series of activities begins at 8:30 a.m. with the "First Annual Avenger Coaches Clinic." Over 50 high school football coaches from all over Southern California will observe the team's morning practice session, which will be followed by a 90-minute clinic, featuring the entire Avenger coaching staff and certified athletic trainers from the "Team to Win" program at Centinela Hospital.
The clinic kicks off the Avengers' "Connect with Coaches" program, which aims to assist local high school football programs through fundraising, speaking engagements, banquets, game-day events and various other activities.
Under the direction of new head coach Ed Hodgkiss, the Avengers open the 2002 season (the AFL's 16th) on Friday, April 19, at STAPLES Center against the New York Dragons. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and everyone in attendance will receive a free Avenger "Red-Out" T-shirt.
Avenger season tickets, which include all seven home games played at STAPLES Center, are now on sale and can be purchased over the telephone at (888) AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com.
