Tonight's Pitching Matchup: Brad Hand takes the mound for Jupiter, looking to pick up where the Hammerheads pitchers left off last night. The 20 year old lefty has been dominant at every stop of his recent career. As a senior in high school, Hand won the 2008 Gatorade Minnesota Player of the Year award, striking out 80 over 45.1 innings. After signing with the Marlins as their second round pick in 2008, he debuted first with the GCL Marlins (34 Ks in 32.3 IP) and then made it to Jamestown (12 Ks in 15 IP). Last season, Hand led the Greensboro Grasshoppers with 122 strikeouts in 127.2 innings. Opposing Hand will be Mets' lefty Robert Carson. The 21 year old spent last season in Single-A Savannah, tossing 131.2 innings with a 3.21 ERA.
About Last Night: On the strength of two big innings at the plate and nine solid innings on the mound, Jupiter put together a complete performance in defeating the St. Lucie Mets 7-2 Thursday night. It marked the first Opening Day win for Jupiter since 2005. Starter Johnny Dorn (1-0) allowed consecutive singles to lead off the 2nd inning, and Mets first baseman Stefan Welch eventually scored on a fielder's choice. That was the only blip on an otherwise sparkling Florida State League debut for the 24 year old righty, as he faced the minimum number of batters from that point until his departure after the 6th. At the plate, Jupiter chased Mets starter Jeurys Familia before the righty could get through four innings. A sudden loss of control loaded the bases for Jupiter DH Jeremy Synan, and he came through with a line drive to score two, giving the Hammerheads a lead they would not relinquish.
Major League Stars In Jupiter: Last night was the Florida State League season opener, but the first batter to step to the plate wasn't exactly a minor leaguer. Two-time NL All-Star Jose Reyes led off with a groundout, on his way to an 0-for-4 night. But Reyes played all nine innings at shortstop, proving his health enough to reportedly rejoin the New York Mets tonight and take his place in the big league lineup Saturday. Jupiter's MLB cameo came a little bit later, but looks to last longer as well. Outfielder Brett Carroll began his rehab assignment last night, as he tries to work back from a strained left oblique. Probably not helping in that bid to get healthy, Carroll reached base in the 3rd when he was hit by a pitch. He would come around to score on Synan's single. Ultimately though, like Reyes, Carroll would end the night 0-for-4.
Small Steps, Big Results: With an opening line of seven runs on 10 hits, one might think the ball was flying around Roger Dean Stadium last night. But the Hammerheads did their damage almost completely one base at a time. Of the 10 hits, only Kevin Mattison's ground-rule double went for extra bases. But by stringing the hits together (seven in the 3rd and 4th innings), along with some wildness by the Mets pitchers, Jupiter was able to create big innings without a lot of big hits.
Finishing Strong: With just three outs separating the Hammerheads from their first Opening Day win since 2005, reliever Jhan Marinez didn't leave anything to chance. Facing the heart of the Mets lineup, Marinez put the ultimate exclamation point on the game, striking out the side.
