August 15, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Long Beach Armada News Release
(Pleasanton, CA. August 15, 2006) The Golden Baseball League today announced that Jose Canseco is scheduled to start his first regular season game as a pitcher for the Long Beach Armada. Canseco will start this Wednesday, August 16th at 7:05 P.M. at Blair field in Long Beach as his team faces the first-half GBL champions, the Reno Silver Sox.
"Jose is ready to go and we have penciled him into the rotation for the remainder of the season," said Long Beach Armada Manager Darrell Evans. "He has been throwing very effectively in bullpen sessions the last several weeks and I'm looking forward to seeing him in live action."
Canseco, 42, features a knuckleball and fastball as his primary pitches and will be pitching in a regular season game for the first time since appearing as a Texas Ranger in one outing on May 29, 1993. He faces the Reno Silver Sox, who dominated the GBL in the first half of the season and present a line-up of many of the best hitters in the league. As a team, Reno leads the GBL in most hitting categories, including batting average and home runs.
Canseco did pitch in the GBL All-Star game in mid-July with limited success, and has been working on his mechanics and arm strength since then under the tutelage of renowned pitching coach and 1968 Detroit Tigers World Champion, Jon Warden. Warden has sent more pitchers from independent professional baseball to major league organizations than any other pitching coach during the last two years.
Canseco is currently scheduled to have his second start in Yuma, Arizona against the Yuma Scorpions on Sunday, August 20th and his third, and final start, back home in Long Beach against the San Diego Surf Dawgs on Saturday, August 26th.
"I'm grateful that the coaches are giving me this opportunity and I can't say enough about how much I've enjoyed being part of this team," said Canseco. "I've worked hard on my pitching the last five weeks, have learned a lot from Coach Warden, and I'm excited to finally pitch again in a professional game."
Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased online at www.longbeacharmada.com or by calling 562-434-7161.
