Jersey Flight News Release

TRENTON - The Jersey Flight have announced today the signing of offensive lineman Shawn Lockett. Lockett was the center for the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks in 2017 when quarterback Warren Smith Jr. won the National Arena League MVP and the Steelhawks went 9-1. Lockett spent a total of three seasons with the Steelhawks. He also played for the Philadelphia Soul in 2017 and the Albany Empire in 2018. Lockett attended American International College in his hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts.

"Shawn brings valuable experience to the team as we build our trenches," Flight head coach Terrence Foster said. "Having the ability to play center, guard, and fullback definitely builds our depth up front. He has a very high football IQ and the high energy motor to match. Shawn is another athlete we have signed that work and coaches in his local school district. We look forward to introducing him to ours," Foster added.

Lockett joins the Flight after most recently playing for Albany in 2018.

"I'm coming in the door hungry, ready to compete, ready to show the league that year off was nothing, and I'm here to raise that trophy," Lockett said regarding the 2021 season with the Flight. "I'm looking forward to interacting with the fan base and just creating something special and different with my teammates and coaches to come our week 1 and put the league on notice "watch out for the flight" I'm ready to get after it," Lockett said.

Lockett split time between center and fullback with the Steelhawks. At fullback he caught a four-yard touchdown and attempted six rushes for 11 yards. At center he was the Steelhawks offensive lines anchor and helped protect Smith during one of his most successful seasons as a pro.

Lockett and Smith are both high school football coaches in their hometowns, with Lockett coaching the offensive line and Springfield Central High School. Lockett's younger brother, Terry Lockett, is a Syracuse Commit who won the Most Outstanding DL in Western Massachusetts two seasons in a row.
