Herrera tosses gem; Curve snag victory
June 6, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA - Yoslan Herrera turned in arguably his best performance in his Curve career, tossing eight scoreless innings which helped set the stage for extra inning heroics and a 1-0 Curve win over the Connecticut Defenders on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark .
Herrera allowed just four hits and did not walk en route to notching a season-high six batters in the best performance by a Curve hurler this year.
Shelby Ford provided the game-winning base hit in the bottom of the tenth to score Luis Cruz which sent the Curve to their ninth win in the last 11 games.
With one out in the bottom of the tenth, Cruz hit a ground ball that went under the glove of Connecticut shortstop Jake Wald. A walk to pinch-hitter Pedro Powell pushed Cruz to second to get him into scoring position for Ford's big hit. Ford (2-for-4) owned two of the Curve's four total hits in the contest.
After Herrera left the game, Evan Meek (1-1) came on to toss a pair of scoreless innings of relief and secure the first win of his Curve career.
Joey Martinez pitched well for Connecticut (26-33), as the right-hander scattered just three hits over seven scoreless innings. Steve Palazzolo came on to pitch 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Defenders before the Curve scored in the tenth.
The Curve (25-33) will look to grab the second game of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Josh Hill (4-5, 3.81) will start for the Curve as Connecticut will counter with righty Adam Cowart (4-3, 3.58).
On Saturday night at BCB, the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a complimentary Curve Beanie Giveaway courtesy of the Teeter Group and Eastern Insurance Holdings, Inc. The Curve will also honor the 2002 Curve squad which will be highlighted by an appearance from former pitcher Ben Shaffar. Saturday will also be Hometowns of Somerset County Night, while kids can run the bases after the game, thanks to Thomas Chevrolet of Bedford.
Great seats for Saturday's contest are still available and can be obtained over the phone by calling 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com or in person at the BCB box office.
