Griffins Sign NHL Veteran Blake Sloan

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Tuesday signed right wing Blake Sloan to a professional tryout and released center Jeff Nelson, returning him to the Muskegon Fury of the United Hockey League.

Sloan, 28, has played 262 games in the National Hockey League since 1998, totaling 43 points (11-32-43) and 155 penalty minutes for the Calgary Flames, Columbus Blue Jackets and Dallas Stars. He appeared in 67 games with Calgary last season, showing 10 points (2-8-10) and 28 PIM before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

A former Michigan Wolverine who won the Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999, Sloan recently helped Team USA earn a 3-0 record and claim a championship in the Deutschland Cup, an international tournament that took place Nov. 7-9 in Hannover, Germany.

Sloan, who played portions of three seasons in the International Hockey League with the Houston Aeros, is expected to be in the Griffins' lineup on Wednesday when the Aeros visit Van Andel Arena at 7 p.m.

The 30-year-old Nelson, who starred with the Griffins during their 1996-97 IHL season, appeared in nine games with Grand Rapids since signing a tryout on Oct. 28, contributing five points (1-4-5).
