Gladiators Sign Minnesota Duluth Forward Akins

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that they have agreed to terms with Drew Akins, a forward out of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Akins will make his professional debut tonight with the Gladiators, when they take on division rival South Carolina Stingrays at 7:05 p.m.

A 24-year-old Excelsior, Minnesota, Akins appeared in 153 games over four seasons at Minnesota Duluth, tallying 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points while serving 240 penalty minutes. Prior to skating with the Bulldogs at UMD, Akins played one junior season each in the North American Hockey League and the United States Hockey League, totaling 70 points over the two seasons from 2004 to 2006.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL at home tonight, March 31st vs. South Carolina at 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
