Ellsbury Named Eastern League Player of the Week

Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs' outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of August 7-13, 2006. Major League Baseball Advanced Media made the selection.

For the week, Ellsbury hit .400 (10-25) with seven runs scored, a double, two triples, and his first Double-A home run. Ellsbury also drove in three runs and stole a base. He has hit safely in seven straight games.

Ellsbury joined the Sea Dogs on July 13th when he was promoted from Single-A Wilmington. The 22 year-old was selected by the Red Sox in the first round (23rd overall) in the June 2005 draft. Entering the season he was rated by Baseball America as the "Best Defensive Outfielder, Fastest Runner", and Best Athlete" in the Red Sox farm system.

Ellsbury is the third Sea Dogs player to take home Eastern League Player of the Week honors this season joining third baseman Chad Spann and outfielder Brandon Moss. Sea Dogs' pitchers Phil Seibel and Kason Gabbard were also named Eastern League Pitcher's of the Week this season.

The Sea Dogs have an off day today before beginning a three game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at Hadlock Field.
