DownTown Yorkie introduced as Revolution mascot
April 2, 2007 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
After an extensive search that led to much anticipation and speculation, DownTown was welcomed to the York Revolution family during a special performance of "Mascot: The Musical" at the DreamWrights Theater on Saturday afternoon. The introduction of DownTown Yorkie, which is the full name of the Revolution mascot, came on the heels of a series of peculiar sightings around town throughout last week.
During Saturday's production, which was set at a York City town meeting, members of the York Revolution staff played the roles of townspeople, while Marketing Manager Greg Vojtanek acted as Mayor. Adults and children alike filled the theater and enjoyed the performance, along with other activities and special appearances. The production highlighted the mysterious sightings and culminated with the introduction of DownTown Yorkie by Revolution on-field host Stu-pendous, to the strains of, what else but - "Downtown."
Upon being introduced, DownTown appeared to immediately feel at home, dancing and interacting with children, media, other mascot friends and members of the Revolution front office staff. Following the performance, a brief press conference took place which introduced Downtown Inc (www.downtownyorkpa.com) as the sponsor of the new Revolution mascot. As part of the partnership, Downtown Inc will help facilitate and secure appearances and events with DownTown throughout the Business Improvement District.
"In talking with the Revolution, we have found that our two organizations share in our hope and vision for downtown York," said Christina Mauhar, the executive director of Downtown Inc. "Through these mascot events and appearances, we hope to bring enhanced visibility to downtown and drive traffic to our merchants and businesses."
During the press conference, Mr. Marcus Trust was also introduced as the president of the Sovereign Bank Rookie Revs Kids' Club and 2nd grader Ciera Snead was recognized for helping to name DownTown Yorkie. Ciera submitted the name "Yorkie" as part of the York Literacy Council's Buck-A-Book program.
Through an interpreter, DownTown thanked those in attendance by saying, "I already feel like part of this family! I just fit right in! I can't wait to meet all kinds of new friends and move into my new home at Sovereign Bank Stadium."
The DownTown Yorkie costume was designed and manufactured by Raymond Entertainment Group in Newark, DE and the name of the character speaks to the location of the soon-to-be-opened ballpark in Downtown York.
"We welcome DownTown to our team and to our family with open arms," said Revolution General Manager Matt O'Brien. "It became obvious throughout the week that this character very badly wanted to 'Join the Revolution' and this was a case of persistence really paying off. We look forward to introducing DownTown to the entire York community over the coming days and weeks."
DownTown is anxious to start making his way around York Co. and surrounding areas before the season begins.
