Rome Renegades News Release
ROME, Ga. - Longtime Rome broadcaster Doug Walker, 52, has been named Director of Marketing and Sales for the Rome Renegades of the American Indoor Football League. Walker said "I am extremely happy to be joining the Renegades organization. They are proven winners and indoor football is perhaps the fastest growing sport in the country. The sport, and the Renegades are going to be around for a long time. I look forward to helping make Renegade football the most exciting family entertainment option in northwest Georgia".
Walker has been affiliated with WRGA in Rome since May of 1984. He will continue to co-host the stations highly rated 'Good Morning Live' programs weekdays from 6-9 am but will relinquish his responsibilities as News Director.
Walker is a native of Falls Church, Virginia, a graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in Communications. His first post in broadcasting was with a station in northern Virginia doing a high school football game of the week. "Sports has always been for first love", said Walker "I'm excited about the growth opportunities with the Renegades and the sport itself."
The longtime broadcaster is a former President of the Georgia Association of Newscasters (1990 and 1991) and has won numerous awards from United Press International and other organizations throughout his career. Walker has also served as News Director for stations in Waycross and Columbus Georgia, as well as Montgomery Alabama.
Walker has been the voice of the Rome High Wolves for many years where he first became associated with Renegades Head Coach and co-owner David Humphreys who was a coach at Rome High at the time. This past fall, Coach Humphreys joined Walker in the broadcast booth as color analyst for the Rome High broadcasts.
Walker said, "I hope to play a role in making Renegade football an even greater player in the quality of life in Rome. The sport is fast paced and exciting and it's a great chance for Romans to get to know these young men who are very talented and may one day wind up in the Canadian or National Football Leagues. They are great role models for youngsters in Rome and Floyd County who dream of having a career in professional sports. It's certainly been a lifelong dream of mine to have an opportunity to work with a professional sports franchise and I want to thank Harry Pierce and David Humphreys for giving me this opportunity".
