June 19, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (June 19, 2006) - Broadcast partners D.C. United and Comcast SportsNet announced today the remaining television schedule for the Black-and-Red. This marks the tenth season Comcast SportsNet and D.C. United have partnered to air D.C. United matches. The announcement ensures a total of 20 live game broadcasts for 2006 with pre-game elements, a live post-game show and high definition production of home telecasts. With eight regular-season games having already aired on Comcast SportsNet this season, the agreement includes 10 of United's remaining League games, with coverage resuming on Saturday, June 24 for United's home match-up against the Kansas City Wizards. The regional sports network will also air United's July 12 friendly against famed Celtic FC, a member of the Scottish League.
"We are pleased to bring the greatest fans in Major League Soccer greater access to the Black-and-Red," said United Sr. Vice President Stephen Zack. "Our club has performed remarkably well to this point in the season and we look forward to creating more great memories throughout our 10th Anniversary season."
Comcast SportsNet, a division of Comcast Corporation, is a service of Philadelphia-based Comcast Regional Sports Television serving more than 4.7 million homes in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington D.C., via more than 200 cable systems in the mid-Atlantic region and major satellite services. The network is home to coverage of the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Wizards and D.C. United, as well as original programming featuring the region's professional, minor league and collegiate teams.
Veteran broadcaster Dave Johnson returns for his eleventh season as the television voice of D.C. United. One of the premier soccer announcers in the United States, Johnson has done play-by-play of outdoor and indoor soccer for more than 15 years, appearing on Comcast SportsNet, Prime Network and ESPN. He also serves as the radio play-by-play voice of the Washington Wizards and can be heard on WTOP Radio as the station's morning sports anchor, where he has won three A.I.R. awards as best radio sportscaster in Washington. He also received an Emmy as host of the NHL's Washington Capitals "Face Off" television show.
John Harkes joins Johnson as color analyst for D.C. United broadcasts. Harkes, who serves as Director of Youth Development for the Black-and-Red, enters his second year as Johnson's broadcast partner. Previously, Harkes co-hosted the 2003 edition of MLS Wrap on Fox Soccer Channel. Harkes, an American soccer legend who was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame last year, captained D.C. United to their 1996 and 1997 MLS Cup Championships. Tony Limarzi, Garth Lagerway and Russ Thaler join Johnson and Harkes as a part of United's broadcasting team.
In addition to their Comcast SportsNet schedule, D.C. United will make three other appearances on national television later this season. They will next be seen on espn2 during their August 19 game in Colorado, set for 4:00 p.m. ET. The Real Salt Lake game, which will air on Comcast SportsNet has been moved from August 5 to July 29 in order to accommodate the MLS All-Star Game.
Broadcasting and P.A. Request: When speaking of the organization, please refer to the team as either "D.C. United" or "United," but not "the D.C. United" or "the United." We appreciate your cooperation.
