Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today the addition of two pitchers to the 2013 squad. Jake McCoy and Marlin Morris will pitch for the Steamers this summer.
McCoy is a 6-3, 225-pound redshirt-freshman from the College of the Desert (CA) in the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association's Foothill Conference. The Longview, Wash., native is a right-handed pitcher and rotation ace for the Roadrunners this spring after pitching for the Palm Springs Power in the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League last summer. He made 14 appearances for the SCCBL champions in 2012, including one start. He logged 28.2 innings overall and finished with a 2.20 ERA, a .194 batting average against, 1.08 WHIP and 44 strikeouts to only 10 walks. So far this spring for the Roadrunners, McCoy has made eight appearances and five starts. He has a 2.36 ERA, a .209 batting average against, 1.11 WHIP and has struck out 25 batters to allowing only 10 walks in 34.1 innings pitched. He is an imposing power-armed prospect that brings all the ingredients that pro scouts are looking for to the table. This summer he will look to up his competition level and refine his overall craft with Edenton. McCoy features a four-seam fastball that tops out in the low to mid 90s, a swing and miss two-seamer in the upper 80s that can also produce weak contact and a hard slider in the low 80s. After red-shirting in 2012 and working primarily out of the bullpen last summer, McCoy needs to make strides with his command and control to reach his considerable ceiling.
Morris comes to Edenton as a 6-2, 175-pound sophomore left-handed pitcher from the University of South Carolina-Sumter in the NJCAA Division I Region X conference. He is a weekend starter for the Fire Ants and so far this spring has made four appearances (all starts), including two complete games. In 25 innings pitched he has a 2.16 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 28 strikeouts to four walks. He hails from Charleston, S.C. and as a 2012 freshman at North Greenville University (SC) in the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas, he was the frontrunner for Conference Pitcher of the Year honors before an injury cut short his promising debut. Having transferred to USC-Sumter, Morris is looking to make the jump back into the NCAA ranks next year and is weighing offers from a number of quality Division I and II programs in the Southeast region. He has a long and loose delivery and is able to generate fastball velocity in the mid to upper 80s. Morris complements his fastball with a full arsenal of secondary pitches that he can unleash in any count and his repertoire is buoyed by his above-average command overall. He has matured as a pitcher over the last two seasons and looks to take his game to the next level this summer with the Steamers in the CPL.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
