Chops start strong, but Hamilton scores five unanswered to top Chops
March 17, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
Five straight unanswered goals by the Hamiton Bulldogs propelled them to a 5-2 win over the Iowa Chops on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Chops started strong with goals by Drew Miller (shorthanded) and Chad Painchaud, but finished with a whimper, as Hamilton outshot Iowa 24-14 in the final two periods. Special teams again played a big difference in the game as the Bulldogs went 2 for 5 on the power play, while the Chops went 0 for 4.
The Iowa Chops got off to a very strong start, as just 2:51 into the game and on the penalty kill Chops captain Ajay Baines raced in on a shorthanded breakaway that was denied by BUlldogs goaltender Marc Denis. However, the rebound was collected by Drew Miller, who put home his 23rd goal of the year to put the Chops up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Chad Painchaud made it 2-0 on a great pass from Petteri Wirtanen. Eric Regan also assisted on the play. But, the Bulldogs wouldn't go quietly to the lockerroom in period one as two straight goals from Ryan Flinn and Mike Glumac tied the game 2-2 after one period of play.
The 2nd period was all Bulldogs, as they took advantage of their power play opportunities. The Iowa Chops penalty kill, which came into the game second to last in the AHL, wasn't much better on Tuesday. Hamilton took their first lead of the night with a power play goal from Mathieu Aubin, who got loose in the high slot to put one past a helpless JP Levasseur. Six minutes later, David Desharnais made it 4-2 as his shot deflected off an Iowa Chops defenseman's glove and in behind Levasseur for a 4-2 Bulldogs lead. The Iowa Chops power play meanwhile, sputtered. The Bulldogs outshot the Chops 15-9 in the 2nd period and increased their lead to two goals.
The 3rd period was all Bulldogs, as the Chops didn't manage a shot until the final five minutes. An empty-net goal from Kyle Chipchura put the game out of reach with the 5-2 final score. The Chops return to the Wells Fargo Arena on Friday, March 20th to face the Rockford Ice Hogs at 7:05pm. Friday is Family Fun Night with plenty of games and activities for the kids in the concourse.
