Chiefs Add Experience With McKenzie
October 28, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that they have signed right wing Jim McKenzie for the 2009-10 season.
"The Chiefs are happy to add Jim's combination of size, skill, and grit. We feel he is a great fit and will make an immediate impact," said Vice President and General Manager Bill Bredin.
A 6-2, 210-pound forward, McKenzie was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the fifth round (#141 overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. That came after a strong showing in his final season of juniors with Sioux Falls of the USHL. In 2003-04 he was second on the team in points (64), first in assists (37) and in penalty minutes (168). That season he served as team captain, was named team MVP, and was also the MVP of the 2004 USHL Prospects/All-Star Game after tallying two goals including the overtime game winner.
Before signing with Ottawa prior to the 2007-08 season, McKenzie spent three seasons at Michigan State, and won a national championship with the Spartans in 2007. In the championship game, he assisted on former Chief Chris Mueller's empty net goal with 1.2 seconds left in the win over Boston College.
The St. Paul, Minnesota native opted to forgo his senior season and signed with Ottawa. He split the 2007-08 campaign between the Senators' two minor league affiliates; Binghamton (AHL) and Elmira (ECHL). He had three points (2G, 1A) in 18 AHL games, while in Elmira he notched 19 points (9G, 10A) in 43 contests. He spent the entire 2008-09 season with Binghamton skating in 44 games and scoring five points (1G, 4A).
McKenzie is expected to be in uniform when the Chiefs visit Trenton and Reading this weekend, and will wear number 24 on his sweater.
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice on Wednesday, November 11 against Reading at 7:35. The Chiefs will honor military veterans in a special pregame ceremony, and a special Veterans' Day price of $5 is being offered to all active military members as well as veterans. The Chiefs will also wear special camouflage jerseys that will be auctioned off live immediately following the game. Good seats are still available. For tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.com or the War Memorial Box Office, or to order by phone call 1-800-TICKETMASTER.
