March 31, 2008 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Chicago Machine News Release

The Chicago Machine announced the hiring of Phil Ryan as assistant coach recently, continuing to bolster a revamped coaching staff. The Machine, who named former assistant John Combs head coach in December, believe the coaching moves will help the team continue the progress they achieved at the end of last season.

"We are extremely excited to have Phil Rynn join our staff," said Combs. "Phil brings a wealth of lacrosse experience to the Machine. I am looking forward working with Phil to continue to build on the the progress the Machine generated last year."

Ryan most recently served as Vice President, Director of Lacrosse Operations, for the Chicago Shamrox of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Also a former player in the NLL, Phil was raised in Merrick, Long Island and played college lacrosse at Nassau Community College (N.Y.) and at top-ten Divison III Washington College (Md.). In 1991 he moved to the Chicago area and began working for Merrill Lynch in their Futures Operations Division.

While working with Merrill Lynch, Phil coached college and high school lacrosse and also assisted in the development of Lacrosse . Lacrosse is a company that was founded by Rich Martin in 1991 to promote and grow the sport of lacrosse in the Chicagoland area. His Illinois coaching highlights include two Illinois High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) State Championships, 2000 IHSLA Coach of the Year and a career record of 103-52. In December 2001, he left Merrill Lynch Futures to become a partner in Lacrosse America so that he could focus all of his attention to expanding lacrosse in the southwest suburbs of Chicago.

"I am honored and excited about being asked to be part of the Chicago Machine's coaching staff," said Ryan. "I have a great amount of respect for the experience and success Coach Combs has had in his career and I look forward to working along side him as we prepare for the 2008 season."
