Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 5, 2011) - The Winston-Salem Dash announced today that RHP Justin Cassel has been activated from the disabled list and transferred from AA Birmingham to Winston-Salem. In a corresponding roster move, LHP Brad Furnish has been sent to low-A Kannapolis.

Cassel has been on the disabled list since May of last season after having right shoulder debridement surgery. The goal of the surgery is to clean up debris in the shoulder. Cassel threw in seven games (five starts) between AAA Charlotte and AA Birmingham in 2010. He combined to go 0-3 with a 2.91 ERA in 34 innings. He made all five of his starts with the Barons and in his last start gave up one run in six innings but still got the loss.

A Northridge, CA native, Cassel was drafted in the seventh round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of California - Irvine. He pitched for Winston-Salem in parts of 2006 and 2007, combining to go 5-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 14 appearances (ten starts). He had a breakout year in 2008 with Birmingham where he went 10-4 and put up a Southern League-best 3.11 ERA in 28 games, all starts. He was named to the league's midseason All-Star Team and was honored with the SL Pitcher of the Week award (4/28 - 5/4).

Cassel's brother, Matt, is currently a quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL.

Furnish was signed by the White Sox organization in early July and assigned to Winston-Salem on July 2. In four games (three starts) he was 0-2 with an 8.49 ERA, but gave up only one run on three hits in five innings during his most recent start on July 29 against Myrtle Beach.

The Dash roster is currently at 24 players, one below the Carolina League limit.
