Capitals Sign Wingers Ivan Ciernik and Darcy Verot

Washington, DC - The Washington Capitals, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Portland Pirates, on Friday re-signed Ivan Ciernik and signed free agent Darcy Verot to one-year contracts. The announcement was made by vice president and general manager George McPhee. Per team policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Ciernik (CHEER-nick), a right wing who will turn 26 next month, played last season with both Washington and the Pirates.

In 47 games for the Capitals, Ciernik scored eight goals and 10 assists to total 18 points, while collecting 24 penalty minutes. He added four goals and six assists for 10 points in 13 games with the Pirates, registering six minutes in penalties.

A native of Levice, Slovakia, Ciernik was acquired via waivers by Washington Jan. 19, 2002, from the Ottawa Senators.

In 82 career NHL games he has totaled 24 points, 11 goals and 13 assists, while recording 32 penalty minutes. With Washington, he has scored eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 53 games, adding 26 minutes in penalties.

Verot (ver-OH), a left wing and a native of Radville, Saskatchewan, spent last season with the Saint John Flames, Calgary's AHL affiliate. In 73 games he scored five goals and 11 assists for 16 points, while amassing 299 penalty minutes.

The 27-year-old has yet to appear in an NHL game, having played the last four seasons in the AHL with both the Calgary and Pittsburgh organizations.

Both players are scheduled to be in uniform when the Capitals begin training camp on-ice workouts September 12 at the team's practice facilities at Piney Orchard Ice Arena in Odenton, Maryland.
