Can-Am League Game Recaps
June 22, 2015 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
New Jersey 6, Kansas City 5
The New Jersey Jackals held off a late charge from the Kansas City T-Bones and claimed a 6-5 win at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The Jackals went to work right away as 3B Mark Threlkeld doubled home SS Peter Mooney in the bottom of the first inning. They doubled that lead when C Tony Caldwell had an RBI single in the second. The T-Bones tied the game in the top of the third on RBI from 3B Nate Tenbrink and RF Adam Bailey but New Jersey took the lead right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Threlkeld homered in the fifth and Gomez stole home in the sixth to put the Jackals comfortably out in front.
But the T-Bones rallied in the top of the ninth scoring runs on a single from C Brian Erie, a bases loaded walk to 2B Ryan Cavan and a sac fly by Tenbrink. The Jackals intentionally walked Bailey and then forced LF Kyle Robinson to fly out to end the game.
Ottawa 9, Quebec 3
The Ottawa Champions took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning and never trailed again on their way to a 9-3 win against the Quebec Capitales.
Quebec scored first with two runs in the second inning but Ottawa scored three in the fifth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and three more for good measure in the top of the ninth. 2B Roberto Ramirez was just a triple shy of the cycle and went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. 3B Matt Tenaglia also left the yard in the game as he had a two-run home run. 1B Jon Talley added a pair of hits and an RBI for the Champions.
For the Capitales, six different batters each had one hit and 1B Tim Smith and C Jean-Lux Blaquiere each had an RBI. On the bump, starter Andrew Werner was tabbed as the winner for working eight innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits while just walking one and striking out five.
Sussex County 5, Rockland 3
The Sussex County Miners lead the whole way on Monday night as they toppled the Rockland Boulders 5-3.
Sussex County took the lead in the top of the second inning as 1B Kenny Bryant homered and RF Chris Valencia scored on an infield single from DH Carlos Hughes. In the bottom of the frame, SS Junior Arrojo hit a sacrifice fly to put the Boulders on the board. CF Reggie Abercrombie had an RBI single in the third sandwiched between a diving catch to end the second and throwing out C Marcus Nidiffer at the plate to end the third. In the sixth, Valencia had an RBI double to right and scored on a wild pitch and those two runs proved to be the difference.
For the Boulders, both 3B Ryan Fisher and RF Stefen Henderson went 2-for-4 and one of Henderson's hits was a solo home run.
Shikoku Island 9, Trois-Rivieres 6
The Shikoku Island All Stars took the first game of their three-game series with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles 9-6 on Monday night at Stade Fernand-Bedard.
Seven different batters for Shikoku Island registered hits in the game and five them had multi-hit games. 2B Daiki Masuda and 1B Yoshihiro Kobayashi each had a game-high three hits and Kobayashi as well as CF Yusuke Matsuzawa each had two RBI. For the Aigles, CF Steve Brown went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a home run and both C Kyle Lafrenz and RF Sasha LaGarde went 2-for-4.
Reliever Riku Akiyama earned the win for his 1.1 hitless innings of relief and reliever Naoaki Matsumoto earned a six-out save.
