Salem Red Sox News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, used five multi-run innings to snow the Myrtle Beach Pelicans under 13-10 Thursday night at Coastal Federal Field. The Avs (19-19) closed to within one game of the second-place Pelicans (21-19) in the Southern Division).
The Avalanche nabbed an early 4-1 lead with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings. Myrtle Beach, though, overtook Salem and starter Casey Hudspeth with a four-run third that included five hits. Willie Cabrera drove a pair home with a one-out double.
Then, Salem scored the next nine runs of the game. Four came across in the fifth thanks, in part, to a two-run double from Justin Tellam. In the sixth, Mark Ori's two-run single placed the Avs on top by five at 10-5. In the seventh, three more came across, two on Mitch Einertson's two-run double.
Even so, Myrtle Beach continued to plug away. With one out in the eighth, both Roberto Alvarez and Quentin Davis singled against reliever Matt Sweeney. Jose Camarena then bounced a ball to second that Eric King slung into left field. Alvarez scored to cut the lead to seven. Paul Bennett and Derrick Arnold followed with an RBI groundout and run-scoring single, respectively.
As the ninth began, the lead stood at 13-8. Sweeney walked shortstop Michael Fisher to open the frame. Two batters later, Larry Williams blasted a two-run homer down the left field boundary and the lead was three. Next, Roberto Alvarez singled and Sweeney exited. Sammy Gervacio sauntered in, induced a fly out and struck Jose Camarena out for his 18th save of the season.
The 23 combined runs were the most scored by the two teams in any of their fifteen games this season. The starting pitcher, Hudspeth, earned his first Carolina League win after allowing five runs in five innings. Salem has now won five straight overall.
Game two of the three-game series is set for 7:05 Friday night as righty Sergio Perez throws for the Avalanche against Myrtle Beach's Tommy Hanson.
