Argos welcome guest coaches to camp

Mississauga – Long hours, late nights, early mornings and endless film review are just a few of the incentives being offered to the thirteen guest coaches at Toronto's 2005 Training Camp.

Offensive Coordinator Kent Austin and his team welcomed two guest coaches to assist them with the offence, Ted Goveia and Duwain Painter. In addition, Defensive Coordinator Richard Stubler and his team welcome Don Shindle and Kit Lathrop for the duration of training camp.

Goveia is a former Offensive Guard at Mt. Allison University who went on to be named Offensive Coordinator at his alma mater from 1994 to 1997. Goveia also spent time with McMaster University as their Recruitment and Special Teams Coordinator and was the Head Coach of the Burlington Braves of the CJFL from 1999 to 2001. He is now the Offensive Coordinator for the UBC Thunderbirds.

Duwain Painter is a seasoned football veteran, having coached at various U.S. colleges and in the NFL. Painter has held coaching positions with prestigious football programs at UCLA, Brigham Young and Northern Arizona, and won Super Bowl Championships with San Diego (1993) and Denver (1998) of the NFL. The Argonauts scout has also won a World Bowl title with current wide receiver Robert Baker. Painter is said to have played a significant role in bringing Baker to Toronto.

Don Shindle has garnered a great deal of experience coaching defences at both the collegiate and professional levels over the years. Shindle has coached at Simon Fraser and North Dakota as both a Defensive Backs Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator and won a Grey Cup Championship with the BC Lions in 2000.

Kit Lathrop is a former Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach of the Ottawa Renegades and BC Lions. His football coaching experience also stretches into the NFL where he won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1986. Lathrop is a former player who attended Arizona and was named two-time All-PAC 10 before going to play with the Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos.

In addition, the Argonauts have invited several visiting coaches to observe practice and participate in meetings. These coaches include: Pat Tracy, Defensive Coordinator at Queen's University, Dan Laramee, Defensive Coordinator at the University of Ottawa, Leroy Blugh, former Argonaut and now Head Coach at Bishop's University, Ben Chapdelaine, former McMaster University standout quarterback, Hec Crighton Award winner and current McMaster QB coach, Kyle Walters, former Tiger-Cat and now coach at Guelph University, Clint Uttly, Defensive Coordinator & Head Coach at Acadia University, Marc Lorangar, Defensive Coordinator at Bishop's University, Al Lazar, Head Coach of the London Silverbacks, and Drew Allen, Head Coach at Trinity College School.

As two-a-day practices continue, the Argonauts have announced that Wednesday morning practice has been moved to 9:30 a.m. on the Lower Field. The afternoon practice will remain at 3:00 p.m. on the Upper Field.

The 2004 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003.
