Alexandria, VA. They were up by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but the ABA Alexandria prospect team narrowly edged out the Washington Area Military Conference All-Stars 84-81 at Wells Field House on Fort Belvoir. Five players from the ABA's Baltimore Pearls played along side seven prospects that were at an invitation-only tryout for the ABA's new team, Alexandria-Mongolia United. During the tryout and game, United team officials Tracey Scuggs, President of Basketball Operations and Tyrone Duggins, team consultant had the opportunity to look at some future ABA prospects.

The ABA also invited George Mason University's Tony Skinn and Fort Belvoir's Tyree Harris who played college basketball at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach to play on their team. The WAMAC team, made up of players from Fort Belvoir, Quantico, Bolling Air Force Base, Fort Myer and Andrews Air Force Base, came together to test their abilities against ABA professionals and league prospects. "This game is to help our WAMAC team," said WAMAC and Fort Belvoir's men's coach Sherman Sherin. "We're trying to represent the WAMAC league in some summer tournaments."

"This is the next level of play after the varsity (post) level," said WAMAC coach Herb Marshall of the ABA. "It was a good test of our talent."

The WAMAC team was only able to practice together once before the game. "Other than developing our skills, of course, we're looking for a win, but primarily we're looking for continuity, to gel as a team," Marshall added. The military players were impressed with the level of play of the ABA players. "They were good players, they had good guards," Gray said. It was pretty cool to play with Tony Skinn and Ernie Graham. The tryout and game at Fort Belvoir were sponsored by the Fort Belvoir Credit Union, and Nate Wilson. The Alexandria-Mongolia United will be holding open tryouts in August. It was an exciting, fun and competitive game - and it certainly showed the high level and quality of players in the military. WAMAC should be proud.
