Scott Seabol hit a first-inning grand slam, and Nic Ungs surrendered just one run over seven innings of work to spark the Albuquerque Isotopes (29-14) to their seventh-straight win, a 7-1 triumph over Las Vegas (25-16) Saturday night at Isotopes Park.
After the 51s posted a run in the top of the first-their lone tally of the night-Seabol rocked a Chad Billingsley offering over the wall in left to unload the bases and put the âTopes on top for good. Jason Wood added a three-run blast in the eighth inning, just as the âTopes bullpen closed in another superb effort.
Ungs (6-2) rolled to his sixth win-tied for first in the Pacific Coast League-settling in after allowing three-straight hits and a run in the first. Ungs allowed a run on six hits, walking just one with three Ks. Billingsley (4-1) dropped his first game of the 2006 season, surrendering four runs on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.
Eric Reed and James Shanks each had two hits for an Isotopes team that saw eight of its nine starters pick up at least one base hit.
In the top of the first, the 51s rallied with two outs to draw first blood. A double by Jon Weber was followed up by a run-scoring single from Joel Guzman, putting Las Vegas on top, 1-0. That would turn out to be their last lead-and their last run.
In the bottom half, Reed and Shanks hit back-to-back bunt singles to lead off the frame. Matt Cepicky walked to load the bases and after the next two hitters were retired, Seabol crushed his League-leading 11th home run of the season-a grand slam that pushed the Isotopes on top, 4-1.
Ungs was nearly unhittable from that point forward, as he allowed just three hits over the next six innings and at one point retired 12 batters in succession. He exited after seven with a 4-1 lead, handing the ball off to Joe Horgan. The left-hander kept the 51s off the scoreboard and earned a hold in the eighth inning. In the bottom half of the eighth, the first two hitters singled, and Wood followed it up with a three-run blast to left-center, his seventh of the season, to put the âTopes on top 7-1.
Brad Clontz came on and finished off the 51s in the ninth, striking out the side to seal the Albuquerque victory.
Winners of seven-straight and 15-of-19 at home, the Isotopes will look for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. MT. The âTopes will send Jeff Fulchino (2-2, 5.00) to the hill, and Las Vegas will counter with D.J. Houlton (1-4, 5.48).
A free Isotopes Hat will be given to the first 3,000 fans at Sunday's game, courtesy Wells Fargo and Comcast. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets and on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255.
