Bears lend support at Newark Arena groundbreaking

NEWARK, NJ, October 3- Newark Bears mascot Rip-n-Ruppert and members of the team's front office were on hand to show their support Monday morning at the official groundbreaking ceremonies for the Newark Arena, where the New Jersey Devils hockey team will play upon completion. Bears co-owner Marc Berson, who has been one of the driving forces in getting the new arena built in the city of Newark, was among the many dignitaries on hand along with Newark Mayor Sharpe James, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr. and New Jersey Devils Chairman and Managing Partner Jeff Vanderbeek.
"The Newark Bears organization is excited at the prospect of The Newark Arena adding to the revitalization of this city, which began with the building of our home, Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, and The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, within the last seven years," said Bears spokesperson Jim Cerny. "We look forward in the near future to welcoming the New Jersey Devils organization as our Broad Street neighbors."
Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, the $30 million state of the art home of the Newark Bears, officially opened on July 16, 1999 during the Bears second year of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs. This past season the Bears recorded their third (6,396) and fifth (6,293) largest single-game attendances in stadium history.
