Zephyrs hire Ron Maestri

Metairie, LA – The New Orleans Zephyrs announced today that Ron Maestri has been named Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the club and Mike Schline has been appointed General Manager of Baseball Operations. The announcement was made at a 10:00 AM press conference on Wednesday at Zephyr Field by Zephyrs Owner Don Beaver.

Maestri comes to the Zephyrs after working with the New Orleans Sports Foundation as Executive Director of the New Orleans Bowl. He has also chaired the 2002 WomenÂ’s Volleyball Final Four, 2003 NCAA MenÂ’s Final Four and the 2004 NCAA WomenÂ’s Final Four. Maestri, a member of the New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame, came to New Orleans in the 1970Â’s to lead the University of New Orleans baseball program, a post he held for 14 years. Maestri also held the post of Athletic Director at UNO, a position he held for 21 years until stepping down in 2000. Maestri has also chaired numerous NCAA boards over the years.

“The Zephyrs are very excited to have someone of Ron’s caliber involved with our organization,” said Zephyrs Owner Don Beaver. “Ron has been a major sports figure in New Orleans for over thirty years and brings a wealth of experience to our franchise.”

Schline begins his fourth season with the Zephyrs and first as the General Manager of Baseball Operations after serving as Assistant General Manager. In his ninth season overall in Minor League baseball, Schline previously worked with the Charlotte Knights of the Class AAA International League and the Winston-Salem Warthogs of the Class A Carolina League.

“We are very pleased to officially name Mike as General Manager,” said Beaver. “He has done a tremendous job working for Beaver Sports over the years and has been particularly extraordinary in the transition period, which ends today with Ron coming on board and Mike becoming the General Manager.”

New Orleans will open the season on April 7th in Nashville. The Zephyrs 13th home opener will be Friday, April 15th at 7:05 p.m. Please call 734-5155 for tickets.
