USBL Hands Out Postseason Awards

July 2, 2002 - United States Basketball League (USBL) News Release

MILFORD, CT – The United States Basketball League, Inc. (USBL) announced the recipients of its Annual All-Team Honors today. "The League of Opportunity" has four All-USBL Teams: All-USBL First Team, All-USBL Second Team, USBL All-Rookie Team, and USBL All-Defensive Team. In order to be a candidate for the Post-Season Awards, a player must have competed in a minimum of (15) regular-season games. The Post-Season Awards do not factor in Post-Season play.

Last week the USBL announced that Gary Williams and Devin Brown were awarded "Player of the Week" and "Rookie of the Week", respectively. Each of these players sit atop the list of their All-USBL teams.

The USBL Title in 2002 was truly up for grabs and each USBL team stocked their team with tremendous talent to vie for that Championship. Many individuals turned in awesome seasons and there were many deserving award-winners. On the pages that follow, please find a list of the All-USBL-Team members.

The USBL just completed its 17th season of play when the Oklahoma Storm defeated the Kansas Cagerz 122-109 to win their first USBL Title. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led the Storm to the USBL Title in his first head-coaching job. Along with Abdul-Jabbar seven other former NBA veterans saw action as coaches in the USBL.

As a summer professional basketball league, the USBL has shown its value to the basketball community around the world. Since the League's inception in 1985, 135 players have gone on to the NBA. Among the alumni are Muggsy Bogues, Anthony Mason, Avery Johnson, Darrell Armstrong, Chris Childs, Manute Bol, and Charlie Ward. The USBL also has had 73 players drafted by the NBA. The newest draftee is Corsley Edwards of the Adirondack Wildcats this season. Edwards joins such names as Frankie King, Ryan Robertson, Manute Bol, and Charlie Ward.

"This season has been the best ever for the USBL," stated USBL Founder and Commissioner Daniel T. Meisenheimer III. "The USBL saw great fan interest all season long. We set a new attendance mark with over 240,000 fans coming to see the USBL in action. The talent level was at an all-time high, with many players already receiving NBA invites for the upcoming season. The USBL has already received inquiries from interested parties for next season in the way of expansion and we look forward to seeing what those prospects hold. I would like to thank all the fans and teams in the USBL for making this season a success and look forward to next season where we will continue to showcase all that the USBL is, ‘The League of Opportunity'."
