January 19, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO -- The United Hockey League (UHL) announced Wednesday that the Stanley Cup and Calder Cup will be on display at the 2005 Pepsi UHL All-Star Classic in Glens Falls, New York on January 24, 2005. Representatives from the Hockey Hall of Fame will transport the cups from Toronto, Ontario.
Since 1893, the Stanley Cup as been recognized as hockey's most prized trophy and a symbol of professional hockey supremacy. The cup has traveled around the world with stays in Japan, Switzerland, Russia, the mountain peaks of the Rockies and inside the igloos of Nunavut, Canada. The Stanley Cup has raised over $4 million dollars in the past three seasons.
The Calder Cup has served a source of inspiration for American Hockey League teams throughout the league's 68-year history. It is named after the National Hockey League's first president, Frank Calder, who played an instrumental role in bringing hockey to the mainstream markets, including Boston, New York and Detroit. The Calder Cup is being brought to the All-Star Classic in honor of the alumni players, including Pete Mahovlich, who won the trophy early in their career.
"This is a chance for all hockey fans to get a close look at the cup and get their picture taken with it. It is a rare opportunity in a small American town, and for those in Glens Falls, a chance to view something they will never be able to see again," stated Barry Melrose, owner of the Adirondack Frostbite.
Fans attending the league's sixth All-Star Classic will have a chance to see and photograph the Stanley Cup throughout the game and at the post-game reception. The cups will be available to the public on Sunday afternoon for the Adirondack versus Motor City game.
"We are honored to have two pieces of sports history at the All-Star Classic, and wish to thank the National Hockey League, the American Hockey League, and the Hockey Hall of Fame for allowing us to host these trophies," stated President/CEO Richard Brosal.
