Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

St. Petersburg, FL - October 26, 2017 - Minor League Baseball today announced that the Brooklyn Cyclones, Class-A Affiliate of the New York Mets, are the 2017 recipient of the Larry MacPhail Award. The award is given annually to one MiLB franchise in recognition of their exceptional promotions and marketing efforts both on the field and in the community. It marks just the second time since 1966 that a New York-Penn League club has received the award.

The award is named after National Baseball Hall of Fame member Larry MacPhail, who served as the executive vice-president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers among others during his career. MacPhail was an innovator in the sports industry and was responsible for the addition of lights at Ebbets Field, and later Yankee Stadium, as well as the hiring of Red Barber as the play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers.

"On behalf of the entire Brooklyn Cyclones organization, we would like to thank Minor League Baseball for this prestigious honor," said Cyclones Vice President Steve Cohen. "Our industry is filled with some of the most innovative and creative minds in the world, so to be singled out from the field of so many worthy nominees is truly humbling."

"We are constantly challenging ourselves as a staff to make MCU Park even more fun and entertaining for our fans," said Cyclones General Manager Kevin Mahoney. "This honor shows all of us that our dedication and attention to detail truly pays off. We are very fortunate to have an incredibly talented front office staff that truly embodies the hard work, loyalty and passion that is synonymous with the people of Brooklyn."

The 2017 season marked the third straight year in which the Cyclones were the New York-Penn League's nominee for this honor, and the fifth time in franchise history. The Cyclones have been recognized at the Minor League Baseball Promotional Seminar for the best overall promotion in MiLB following the 2010, 2014 and 2015 seasons and have been nominated for 14 Golden Bobblehead Awards since 2014, more than any other club.

"Year after year, the Brooklyn Cyclones host some of the most creative, entertaining and memorable promotional events in all of Minor League Baseball, events that are appealing to fans of all ages, both locally and across the country," said Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O'Conner. "That the Cyclones have been nominated for more promotional awards than any other club over the last four seasons is a testament to their incredibly creative and talented staff, and their use of MCU Park for community and charitable events has been exemplary. On behalf of Minor League Baseball, I commend them on a job well done, not only for themselves, but also for the New York-Penn League and Minor League Baseball as a whole."

The Cyclones were selected out of a pool of 160 MiLB Clubs, which was narrowed down to 14 finalists - one from each league from Triple-A through Rookie ball. The Cyclones join the Lowell Spinners (2000) as the only New York-Penn League team to receive the honor.

The official award presentation will be made at the Baseball Winter Meetings Banquet on Sunday, December 10th at the Swan & Dolphin Resort in Disney World.
