Eagles Hold off Furious Thunder Rally 5-4

STOCKTON, Calif. -The Colorado Eagles (28-13-0-0) won their 10th game in a row with a 5-4 victory over the Stockton Thunder (13-28-1-0) at Stockton Arena on Sunday afternoon. The win put the Eagles in a tie for first place in the Pacific Division with the Idaho Steelheads.

Only 1:43 into the first frame Eagles forward Taylor Vause capitalized on the first power play of the game as he knocked in a cross-slot feed from linemate Trent Daavettila to take the early 1-0 lead over the Thunder. Less than seven minutes later Eagles defenseman Colin Joe came flying down the ice and shot the puck from behind the goal line at Stockton netminder Cody Reichard who had the puck jump off his stick and into the net to give Colorado the 2-0 advantage. Eagles forward Derek Rodwell picked up his own rebound, on a breakaway, to net the Eagles second power-play goal of the game with just 4:53 left in the first to head into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

After a scoreless second period, Eagles defenseman Collin Bowman picked up a rebound in the high slot and beat Reichard to take the 4-0 lead over the Thunder just2:23 into the third stanza. Stockton avoided being shutout for the second night in a row as forward Tyler Shattock beat Eagles netminder Clarke Saunders for the first time in 109 minutes to put the Thunder on the board, 4-1. Three minutes later, forward Vinny Scarsella netted the Thunder's second goal of the night from the low-slot to cut in to the Eagles lead, 4-2. Joe scored his second goal of the night off of a rebounded shot from forward Chris Duszynski to give Colorado their three-goal lead back, 5-2, 14:25 into the third period. With just :32 left in the final period, Thunder forward Jack MacLellan scored a power-play goal on a furious effort to put them within two, 5-3. Stockton forward Tyler Maxwell put the Thunder within one goal, 5-4, but they were unable to net that final game-tying goal to send the game into overtime as the Eagles took home their tenth consecutive victory.
