Kalamazoo Wings News Release

FORT WAYNE - Fitting on Halloween that a man that wore a mask would pave the way for the Kalamazoo Wings (4-1-1-0) to defeat the Fort Wayne Komets (5-1-0-0).

Joel Martin (3-1-1-0) turned aside 23 shots en route to the K-Wings 3-1 victory Friday night at Allen County Memorial Coliseum over the Komets. The loss snapped the Komets' league-best five game winning streak.

Skating to a scoreless opening period, Fort Wayne finally broke up the gridlock in the middle frame with a goal from Mitchell Heard (3rd). Racing up the ice with an odd-man rush, Heard was able to lift a wrister just under the crossbar 13:40 into the period.

Firing on all cylinders to start the third period, Ray Kaunisto (2nd) evened the game for Kalamazoo just 25 seconds into the frame by swatting down a rebound an Alex Mallet rebound.

Pulling ahead late in regulation, Curtis Valk extended his point streak to six games by stealing a Fort Wayne pass and registering the game-winning goal with on a wrister with 3:20 left in the contest.

Riley Wetmore (2nd) put the game on ice for the K-Wings by netting an empty-netter in the final minute.
