Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks recorded three straight hits to begin the ninth inning, rallying for two runs in the final inning to defeat the Great Lakes Loons Thursday night, 6-5. The Loons have now lost seven straight.
Trailing 4-3, the Loons tied the score in the seventh inning on an RBI double to deep center field by Jesus Arredondo. One inning later, Jesse Bosnik doubled home Joe Winker to give the Loons the lead at 5-4.
That score stood until the bottom of the ninth inning. Tom Belza served a leadoff single into left field. Gerson Montilla followed with a double down the left field line scoring Belza with the tying run. Matt Helm followed and grounded a single up the middle. Montilla scored ahead of the throw from center fielder James Baldwin, which hit the mound.
Yimi Garcia (3-1) picked up the loss and a blown save. After a scoreless eighth, he failed to get an out in the ninth. Matt Sample (2-2) was credited with the win with 1 1/3 scoreless frames.
Jarret Martin started for the Loons and surrendered four runs (all earned), four hits and five walks in just 3 2/3 innings. Joel Lima and Juan Noriega combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings, although Lima left the game with an apparent injury before the start of the seventh.
The Loons (28-32) and Silver Hawks (31-29) meet for the finale of a three-game series at Coveleski Stadium Friday evening at 7:35pm. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and espn1009.com. Right-hander Ralston Cash (0-1, 7.88 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against South Bend righty Tyler Green (1-2, 2.86).
